Seniors and older adults are the fastest growing sector in our population. It is estimated that by the year 2030, 20% of the population will be 65 years of age or older. There are a number of issues facing older adults such as taking and managing an increase number of medications and learning to live with vision loss.
The Occupational Therapist/Certified Low Vision Therapist at the Lions Low Vision Center of Texas, in collaboration with the local chapter of OASIS (a national nonprofit educational organization for seniors) and a local pharmacist are currently collaborating in a community health education project funded by the Bexar Area Agency on Aging. The aim is to educate seniors in the community on medication safety issues and low vision rehabilitation. The pharmacist discusses medication safety and provides a free drug interaction report to identify medications that may be non-compatible. The OT/CLVT provides tips on managing activities of daily living, particularly medication management, with low vision.
